Living room with a brown leather L-shaped sectional, a cherry wood coffee table stacked with magazines, cherry side tables, a rotary telephone, two table lamps and floral valances and drapes over two windows, on a cream tile floor. Before After

Bohemian living room ideas

The starting photo had a brown leather sectional, cherry tables and floral valances. The direction warmed it into a sun-baked bohemian room of terracotta, ochre and cream, with natural rattan and deep teal as the single accent, against the existing beige walls and cream tiles. What you see is one photo and one run, left unretouched.

The palette

Terracotta and ochre, finished with teal.

Named in the design brief the app wrote for this room; the strip is sampled from the result itself.

  • Terracottathe sectional and the right lamp base
  • Warm ochrethe drapes, the right lampshade and the sofa throw
  • Creamthe rug field, the sheers and the tile floor
  • Deep teala pillow, the rug border and the ceramic vessel

What changed

  1. The brown leather sectional became a terracotta washed-linen L-shaped sectional with rolled arms and loose back cushions.
  2. The cherry coffee table and magazines gave way to a round rattan drum table with a wood top and a woven cane band, holding a deep teal vessel.
  3. The floral valances and drapes were replaced by plain ochre drapes on dark wood rods, with the white sheers kept at the glass.
  4. The cherry side tables became rattan: a round one with a brass tray at the left, and a small square one with a caned door at the right. The telephone was removed.
  5. The right lamp became a terracotta glazed gourd base with an ochre drum shade.
  6. A kilim rug in rust, ochre and cream with a deep teal border went under the coffee table, plus an ochre fringed throw and a teal pillow with ochre trim.

Get the look

1

Build on warm earth tones

Terracotta, ochre and cream sit easily against beige walls and cream tile. Put the strongest earth tone on the largest piece, the sofa, and repeat it in a lamp.

2

Mix woven textures

Rattan, cane and a patterned kilim add texture without needing more furniture. Keep them in honey and natural tones so they read as one family.

3

Keep one cool accent

A single deep teal on a pillow, a vessel and the rug border gives the warm palette contrast. One cool colour is enough.
