Japanese living room ideas

The before is an ordinary living room with a brown leather sectional, cherry wood tables and floral valances over two windows. The design direction turned it into a calm, low, tea-house-like room of soft charcoal linen, pale oak and warm off-white, with deep indigo as the only accent. This is one photo and one run of the app, with nothing retouched afterwards.

The palette

Charcoal, pale oak and one indigo note.

Named in the design brief the app wrote for this room; the strip is sampled from the result itself.

  • Warm off-whitethe linen curtain panels and both lampshades
  • Pale oakthe coffee table, side tables, sofa plinth and rug
  • Soft charcoalthe sectional and the right lamp's ceramic base
  • Deep indigoa cushion, a folded throw and a small bowl

What changed

  1. The brown leather sectional became a low, soft charcoal linen L-shaped sectional on a pale oak plinth, in the same corner.
  2. The cherry coffee table with cabriole legs was replaced by a pale oak slab-top coffee table on a trestle base, and the magazine stacks were cleared away.
  3. The floral valances and drapes came down; plain off-white linen panels now hang at both sides of each window, with the white sheers left in place.
  4. Both cherry side tables were swapped for pale wood ones, the right one with a small lower shelf, and the telephone was removed.
  5. The right lamp became a charcoal gourd-shaped stoneware base with an off-white drum shade; the left one a straight off-white cylinder shade on a pale wood base.
  6. A natural flat-woven rug went under the coffee table, and a deep indigo cushion, throw and bowl were added as the single accent.

Get the look

1

Keep it low

Choose a sofa with a low back and a deep seat, and a coffee table that sits close to seat height. With the main pieces kept low, the window wall stays open and the room reads calmer.

2

Repeat one accent three times

Pick one strong colour, like the indigo here, and use it on exactly three small things: a cushion, a throw, a bowl. It ties the room together without competing with the quiet base.

3

Clear the surfaces

Leave the coffee table almost bare, with one object at most. Plain, unpatterned curtain panels do the same job for the window wall.
