Mid-century living room ideas

The before photo shows a brown leather sectional, cherry tables with cabriole legs and floral valances. The direction made it a warm, sociable mid-century lounge: walnut tables, a deep teal sectional, olive drapes and a few mustard accents. It is a single photo, run once through the app and not retouched.

The palette

Walnut and teal, with mustard accents.

Named in the design brief the app wrote for this room; the strip is sampled from the result itself.

  • Walnut brownthe coffee table, side tables and sofa legs
  • Deep tealthe sectional, the right lamp base and the rug
  • Muted olivethe drapes, the throw and the rug pattern
  • Warm mustardthe right lampshade, one pillow and a thin rug band

What changed

  1. The brown leather sectional became a deep teal bouclé L-shaped sectional with a low straight back on tapered wooden legs.
  2. The cherry coffee table was replaced by a long, low walnut surfboard table on splayed legs with brass tips; the magazines were cleared and a walnut tray with a teal bowl added.
  3. The floral valances and drapes made way for muted olive linen panels on slim brass rods, with the white sheers kept.
  4. Both cherry side tables became walnut: a square one with a drawer at the left and a small round one with a lower shelf at the right. The telephone was removed.
  5. The right lamp became a teal glazed gourd base with a mustard drum shade.
  6. A teal and olive geometric rug with a thin mustard band went under the coffee table, along with an olive throw, a striped mustard pillow and a geometric pillow at the left end.

Get the look

1

Ground it with walnut

Use one warm mid-tone wood for every table so the room has a steady base. Tapered, splayed legs give the pieces their lift and keep the floor visible.

2

Let one colour carry the seating

A single saturated upholstery colour, like deep teal, gives the room its character. Repeat it once or twice elsewhere, on a lamp base or the rug, rather than adding a second bold colour.

3

Ration the bright accent

Keep mustard to small doses: a lampshade, one pillow, a thin stripe in the rug. Used sparingly, it lifts the teal and olive instead of fighting them.
