Industrial living room ideas

Before: a dark leather sectional, cherry wood tables and floral drapes with valances. The redesign moved the room toward a loft of raw and aged materials, with cognac leather, reclaimed wood, black steel and a grey wool rug, and burnt rust as the one accent. The palette

What changed

  1. The dark leather sectional became a cognac leather L-shaped sectional with low square arms and loose back cushions, in the same corner.
  2. The cherry coffee table and its magazines were replaced by a reclaimed oak plank top on a matte black steel frame, with a black tray of books and a grey concrete bowl.
  3. The floral drapes and valances were replaced by charcoal linen panels on black steel rods with rings; the white sheers stayed.
  4. The side table by the back wall became a reclaimed oak and black steel table carrying a black domed lamp with an exposed amber bulb.
  5. The end table, telephone and lamp at the left edge were removed.
  6. A grey wool flatweave rug with a charcoal border went under the coffee table, and a burnt rust cushion and a rust throw over the left arm were added.

Contrast leather, wood and steel

Industrial rooms rely on contrast between aged leather, raw wood and black steel. Keep the steel slim and matte so it frames the wood instead of dominating it.

Put the dark tone on the windows

Charcoal curtains bring weight to the room while the walls stay light. Keep sheers behind them so daylight still comes through.

Repeat one warm accent

A burnt rust on a cushion, a throw and a single book cover warms the cognac and grey without adding clutter.
