Coastal bedroom ideas

The starting point is a faded bedroom dressed in red velvet, with dark wooden bedside furniture. Run once through the app, that same photo turned into a weathered seaside room of whitewashed pine, rattan, jute and soft sea blue linen. No retouching: the walls, door and floor stay as photographed, and the old enamel pitcher kept its place.

The palette

Sea blue, sand and whitewash

Named in the design brief the app wrote for this room; the strip is sampled from the result itself.

  • Soft sea bluethe bedspread, the chair's seat cushion and the rug border
  • Whitewashed whitethe headboard, the bed frame and the pillows
  • Warm sand jutethe rug, the rattan chair and the lampshade
  • Driftwood greythe bedside cabinet and the lamp stand
  • Deep marine navythe rug stripes, one cushion and the lampshade trim

What changed

  1. The red velvet bed became a whitewashed pine bed with a plank footboard and a sea blue linen bedspread, with white pillows, a blue-and-white striped pillow and a sand linen throw.
  2. The red upholstered headboard became a whitewashed pine plank headboard.
  3. The red velvet armchair became a natural rattan chair with a sea blue seat cushion and a navy cushion with a white stripe.
  4. The dark bedside cabinet became a driftwood grey cabinet with a rope-loop drawer pull, holding a sea-glass green vase of dried grasses.
  5. The old floor lamp became a turned driftwood grey stand with a sand linen shade trimmed in navy, and a small jute-wrapped drum table now stands behind the bed.
  6. The diamond-pattern rug became a larger jute flatweave with a sea blue border, navy stripes and fringed ends.

Get the look

1

Bleach the wood, don't hide it

Whitewashed pine and limed grey oak keep the grain visible. Matte, chalky finishes look sun-worn rather than brand new.

2

Bring in natural fibres

Rattan, jute and linen add texture without adding colour. Here the chair, the rug and the lampshade all share one warm sand tone.

3

Keep navy for the edges

Sea blue carries the bedding and the chair; deep navy appears only in a cushion, the rug stripes and a thin lampshade trim, which sharpens the palette without darkening it.
