Japanese bedroom ideas
The before is a run-down bedroom with a red velvet bed, a matching armchair and dark wooden bedside furniture against mustard plaster. One photo went through the app once and came back as a hushed, wabi-sabi room in pale oak, off-white linen, charcoal and indigo. Nothing was retouched: the walls, the door and the old floor are exactly as photographed.
The palette
Pale wood, linen and one indigo accent
Named in the design brief the app wrote for this room; the strip is sampled from the result itself.
- Warm off-whitethe bed linen, the paper lantern and the rug
- Pale oakthe bed, slatted headboard, bedside cabinet and chair frame
- Charcoalthe small block table, the rug border and the headboard's top rail
- Deep indigothe throw, the chair cushion and the vase
What changed
- The red velvet bed with its gathered valance became a low pale oak platform bed on a recessed plinth, dressed in off-white linen with an indigo throw folded across the foot.
- The red upholstered headboard became a low headboard of vertical oak slats with a thin charcoal top rail.
- The red velvet armchair became a low oak lounge chair with a slatted back and an indigo seat cushion tied in place.
- The dark bedside cabinet became a long, handleless pale oak cabinet with an open shelf, holding an indigo vase with one bare branch.
- The cream diamond-pattern rug became a larger off-white herringbone rush rug with a narrow charcoal border.
- The old floor lamp became a tall washi paper lantern, and a small paper lamp now glows on a charcoal block table behind the bed; the black metal chair frame, the hanging lampshade and the enamel pitcher were removed.
Get the look
Keep everything low
Choose a bed on a plinth and a chair with a low seat so the eye stays near the floor. Here the bed, the lounge chair and the cabinet all sit low under a tall, bare wall.
One accent colour, used three times
Indigo appears only in the throw, the chair cushion and the vase. Repeating one deep colour in a few small places reads calmer than mixing several.
Let paper soften the light
A washi lantern and a small paper table lamp give warm, diffuse light without glare, which suits pale wood and linen.
