Modern kitchen ideas

The before is a dated galley kitchen with honey oak cabinets, a beige laminate counter and a greenish fluorescent ceiling light. One photo, one pass through the app: the cabinets became matte, handleless slab fronts in charcoal, warm grey and olive under a white quartz top. The green wall tile, the window, the sink and the refrigerator are still the ones in the photo.

The palette

Charcoal low, grey high, olive at the window

Named in the design brief the app wrote for this room; the strip is sampled from the result itself.

  • Warm greythe upper cabinet doors and the linen cloth
  • Deep charcoalthe drawers and doors along the left run
  • Soft whitethe quartz countertop and the ceiling light panel
  • Deep olivethe sink cabinet doors and a ceramic bowl

What changed

  1. The oak base cabinets became a deep charcoal run of handleless slab drawers with recessed finger rails.
  2. The beige laminate counter became a thin white quartz countertop with faint grey veining.
  3. The oak upper cabinets became warm grey handleless slab doors, with a light strip below washing the green tile in warm light.
  4. The oak sink cabinet became a deep olive matte base with two flat doors.
  5. The green-tinted fluorescent panel now glows warm white in the same ceiling recess.
  6. The cookbooks, papers, white drip coffee maker and fridge magnets were cleared, leaving an olive bowl and a grey linen cloth on the counter.

Get the look

1

Echo a colour you're keeping

The olive sink cabinet picks up the existing green wall tile, so the old tile reads as part of the plan instead of something to replace.

2

Dark below, light above

Charcoal base units ground a narrow galley, while warm grey uppers keep the top half of the room light.

3

Clear the counter, light the backsplash

Handleless fronts look best with almost nothing on the worktop, and a strip of warm light under the uppers makes the backsplash glow.
